5 Window Replacement Ideas for Traditional Style Homes

August 31, 2018 0

For homeowners living in a traditional style home, preserving the integrity of its style during a home upgrade project is a top priority. This is particularly important when replacing windows. No one wants to have a window replacement project completed only to discover their home looks disjointed due to mismatched windows and exterior architecture, right?

Here at Brock Doors and Windows Ltd., there are the five suggestions our experts have for you, so you can love your home and your North York, ON replacement windows. Be sure to check out these window styles before beginning your next project.

  1. Casement Windows

Most traditional style homes these days include casement windows. This is because this particular window style supports several architectural styles within the “traditional” genre, such as Tudor, Mock Tudor, and Prairie styles. They’re versatile and allow for great ventilation.
  2. Double Hung Windows

In North America, no other window style is quite as popular as the double hung window. Its versatility accommodates any grille pattern and it’s easy to clean, thanks to tilt-in sashes. Double hung windows provide a homey look without looking too vintage but are perfect for vintage homes when the right material and stain colour is selected. Note: opening both the bottom and the top sash of a double hung window at the same time will allow superior ventilation—this helps to keep the heating and cooling costs down when the outdoor temperatures are less than ideal.
  3. Picture Windows “Combo”

Combining a picture window with another style-appropriate window is a great way to add natural light without compromising on the home’s architectural characteristics. A large picture window flanked by two casement windows is one combination popular for this specific home style. Another suggestion is to combine floor to ceiling picture windows with smaller double hung windows and transom windows on either side. Altogether, these make for a uniquely appealing appearance.
  4. Bay Windows

Bay windows have been a top choice for traditional homes for several years. Because they protrude from the home’s exterior, they add usable space and charm. This style is often associated with grandeur or coziness. Usually, homeowners choose to pair a picture window and two smaller casement or double hung windows on either side to create the “bay.” These can create a breakfast nook in the kitchen, a reading spot in a bedroom, or a shelf for trinkets and photo frames.
  5. Grille Patterns

Grille selections for this window style is important. For example, Tudor and Mock Tudor style homes typically have diamond or lattice patterns, while Prairie style homes look best with their own distinct “prairie” pattern. Of course, most window styles look great without grilles at all. But, if your budget allows, grilles the right traditional addition.
