Spring Checklist: Windows and Doors

April 06, 2022 0

After the Winter the GTA and Simcoe County had, we are welcoming Spring with open arms. The sound of the birds chirping, warmer weather and saying goodbye to snow are all things to look forward to. But with Spring, also comes chores – specifically Spring cleaning. After those long cold Winter months, Spring is an ideal time for window and door maintenance. No matter the age of your windows and doors, regular maintenance will keep them looking and performing their best. Use these 6 easy steps below to ensure your windows and doors longevity.

6 Easy Steps for Window and Door Maintenance

  1. Clean Glass and Surrounding Areas:

Use a damp cloth to remove any dust and dirt from your windows and doors that has collected over the months while also cleaning the glass with a proper glass cleaner. Clean sand, dirt or dust build-up from door and window hinges, sills, and tracks. Debris that is left unattended can often cause issues down the road. EXPERT TIP: For the exterior glass, use a squeegee and a bucket of water with a few drops of dish soap.

  2. Check Weatherstripping:

Check to make sure your weatherstripping is effective and in place on your windows and doors. If damaged, weatherstripping can be replaced, but it’s best to contact an expert before taking this task on. If installed incorrectly, air and moisture can wreak havoc on your home causing inflated energy bills and potential mould and mildew growth.

  3. Examine Interior and Exterior Finishes:

Visually examine your window or door’s interior and exterior finish. Occasional repair to a damaged finish may be necessary if any signs of water or salt corrosion appear. Ensure to take care of this immediately so that further blemishes cease developing.

  4. Repair Caulking:

Look for any old, loose or damaged caulking around your windows and doors. Even small gaps can be big energy-wasters. Seal any gaps with an appropriate, high-quality, colour-matching caulk.

  5. Clean and Tighten Hardware:

Wipe down any dirt or debris from all surfaces. Look at any exposed screws and ensure they are tightened securely. If hardware appears to be sticking, apply a dry lubricant to the windows’ gears or door hinges. A dry lubricant is best as it doesn’t attract dust, dirt, or oil and will keep your windows and doors operating smoothly.

  6. Examine and Install Screens:

If you took screens out of your windows or patio doors for the winter, now is the perfect time to put them back in. Before you re-install your screens, clean and examine for repair. If you see any rips or tears in the mesh, almost all hardware stores offer replacement screens and the installation is quite simple.

If you noticed your windows and doors are not functioning properly while doing your Spring maintenance, now is a great time to look at replacing them.
