Why Do Windows Leak?

November 12, 2018 0

There are a number of reasons why windows can start to leak, but if you take good care of your home with regular maintenance, you’re less likely to experience them in the first place. If you get Barrie, ON replacement windows installed and they start to leak, your window company can come out and fix the issue. If you have older windows, however, there are a lot of common causes for leaks that can occur as time goes by.

Cracked, Aging Caulk

Even custom windows are still going to have caulk around them to prevent water intrusion and give you further insulation. The caulk dries, and it can crack eventually and stop doing what it was meant to do, which is protect your home from water, pests, drafts and more. If you see the caulk around your windows cracking and peeling away, take it off and replace it. You can get caulk at home improvement stores and it’s quite a chore, but you will benefit from the process once it’s complete. If you find that replacing the caulk doesn’t prevent leaks in your window, you may need replacement windows instead.

Heavy Winds And Rain

There are going to be storms from time to time and if you feel the wind and rain seeping into your home due to weather, you could have weep holes. These small cracks and crevices allow that let water drain away from the window frame. But when the rain falls faster than the water can drain, you might see it come into your home. This isn’t due to age, though it can get worse with age. You’ll have to attribute it to the storm and there’s nothing you can really repair. If you want to know what’s going on for sure, contact a window company to have an inspection.

Clogged Gutters

There are lots of home maintenance items you need to keep up with and, on occasion, something’s going to get left behind. If you see a lot of rain pouring past your windows instead of being directed to the downspouts, your gutters probably need to be cleaned out. When the cutters don’t drain properly, water is forced back down toward the home and it could cause windows to leak. Keep gutters clean to give windows a better chance at insulating and protecting your home from the elements.
