Keep reading to learn some of basic verbiage for one of the most popular window styles we have here: the double-hung window!

Let’s begin with the exterior parts of a double-hung window

Generally speaking, these are the parts of the double-hung window you will hear and read about during your search for the perfect replacement windows.

Frame: most know what this means. But, just in case, this part of is the framework which surrounds and lends support to the full window system (head, jamb, and sill).

Sill: the bottom, horizontal part of the window frame—often used to place books or other trinkets.

Head: opposite the sill, this is the main horizontal part of the frame which forms the top of the frame.

Jambs: adjacent to the sill and head, these are the main vertical parts of the frame which form the sides of the window.

Jambliner: alongside the jambs; a strip that provides a snug fit for the sash (see below).

Moving on to the interior parts of a double-hung window

Now, there are a few more parts than listed here, but these are the main ones you want to be familiar with. Plus, you’ll shock your windows expert if you use these terms!

Sash: the panel of the window which hold the panes of glass in place.

Balance: a [usually] spring-loaded mechanical device used in both double-hung and single-hung windows to counter-balance the weight of the sash as you open and close it.

Check rail: a fancy way to refer to the “middle of the window.” This is the part where the upper and lower sash meet.

Glass/pane: obviously, the framed glass inside the window frame. This serves to keep the bugs out, the rain, snow, winds…

Lift: a fancy word for “handle.” Used to raise and lower the mobile sash of a double-hung (or single-hung) window to open and close.

Sash lock system: the mechanism which helps you to secure your window and keep intruders out.
